Uncollected Tax - Form 1040
When a taxpayer did not have enough wages to cover Social Security, Medicare, or RRTA tax on tips reported to an employer, the amount of tax due will be reported in box 12 of Form W-2 with code A (social security or RRTA tax) or code B (medicare tax).
In addition to the above taxes, taxes on part of the cost of group-term life insurance through a former employer might be owed. The amount of tax due will be reported in box 12 of Form W-2 with code M (social security or RRTA tax) or code N (medicare tax).
When code A, B, M or N is entered in box 12 of Form W-2, the TaxSlayer Pro software will automatically pull the amount to the total taxes line of Form 1040. The letters UT and the amount will also be printed on this line.
NOTE: When uncollected tax (UT) is present on the return, Form 1040 must be filed.
