Unreimbursed Employee Expenses and Other Miscellaneous Deductions in 2018

As you know the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act has made a lot of changes to the forms we’re familiar with. Perhaps one of the biggest changes is going to be to Itemized Deductions on the Schedule A. Specifically to the Job Expenses and Certain Miscellaneous Deductions.

Lines 21 – 27 on the Schedule A will be eliminated starting tax year 2018 and ending tax year 2025. You read that right- eliminated. This will include:

  • Unreimbursed Employee Expenses such as uniforms, education expenses, and union dues
  • Tax Preparation Expenses
  • Hobby Expenses
  • Gambling Losses
  • Investment Interest

These expenses will also include any unreimbursed mileage and the home office deduction. If your taxpayers take these deductions every year they may need to do a Paycheck Checkup using the IRS Withholding Calculator. This will allow your taxpayer to see what their tax responsibility will be for the upcoming tax year.
