IRS Confirms Tax Season to begin January 28

The IRS has announced that despite the government shutdown it will begin processing LIVE 2018 tax returns beginning Monday, January 28, 2019. It has also been announced that the IRS has concluded that it has the authority to pay refunds during the shutdown, and it will begin recalling much of its furloughed workforce to handle the filing season.

At this time the IRS has not yet advised TaxSlayer when the IRS HUB testing program will begin. However, we anticipate that the IRS will advise TaxSlayer shortly when they anticipate to start HUB testing, and we will post that information on this Blog once the details become available.

As in past years, during HUB testing TaxSlayer will send batches of tax returns to the IRS, and you may start receiving acknowledgements for some of your returns once HUB testing commences. However, the IRS will not begin to process tax returns for refunds until after the official start of e-file (January 28, 2019).

Finally, due to restrictions placed on the IRS by Congress, no refunds for returns claiming the refundable Earned Income Tax Credit or Additional Child Tax Credit can be issued prior to February 15, 2019.
