It’s that time of year again. Time to get our offices ready for tax season. Here is a list of suggested tasks that need to be performed before the release of the 2018 version of TaxSlayer Pro.
Turn on all computers. In many offices these computers have been turned off since the end of tax season. Hopefully all will start. Then check for Windows updates. Almost certainly there will be some updates to install. Install all the critical and important updates. Also install any optional updates that relate to Microsoft .Net. Reboot and then check again for more updates. Continue this process until Windows says that your computer is up to date.
Check to make sure that all your computers meet recommended specifications for running TaxSlayer Pro. At the very least, all computers should meet the minimum specifications. Follow this link to see the recommended and minimum specifications. Replace any computers not meeting the minimum specifications.
If you use third-party security software, check to make sure that you have current subscriptions for all your computers. If any have expired, either renew your subscriptions or consider using the free Microsoft security products.
Next check your internet connection. Is it working? Does it meet the minimum speeds needed to use TaxSlayer Pro? Are you getting the rated speed that is specified in your contract? Use an online speed test such as DSL Reports Speed Test, Fast.com Speed Test, or Speedtest by Ookla to see your download and upload speed.
Do you have enough supplies for making your disaster recovery backups? How big is the TaxSlayer folder on your Transmitting Computer? Use the File Explorer to navigate to the drive TaxSlayer is installed on. Right click the TaxSlayer folder and choose Properties. This screen will show you how big your TaxSlayer folder is.
Now that you know how much space you need go buy several flash drives at least twice as big as your TaxSlayer folder. Once you have your backup media, make a backup! Use the Program Backup Utility to back up to your new media.
