Prepare For Tax Season

If you are new to the tax preparation industry, or new to e-filing, follow these steps to ensure you are ready for tax season.
  • VERY IMPORTANT -
Please complete the TaxSlayer Pro application located in the
My Account section. Your 2011 TaxSlayer Pro software package will not be shipped until we have a current application on file. The application ensures we have your correct address, phone number, additional contact information and EFIN number for processing your e-filed transmissions. If you offer bank products, the application maintains your bank account information for your fee deposits.

  • VERY IMPORTANT -
Contact your Sales Representative to schedule your
    TaxSlayer Pro training session.

  • Register for the E-services program provided by going to the IRS e-Services website by Clicking Here. This program makes it easy to receive e-file alerts and other useful information year round.

  • Once you are registered with E-services, apply for your EFIN if you plan to e-file. The form you will be completing is Form 8633 ( download here), Application to participate in the IRS E-file program. The IRS help desk for e-filing questions is
    866-255-0654.

  • You should also apply for a PTIN (preparer tax ID number) through E-services or by Clicking Here. The PTIN is very important because it takes the place of the tax preparer’s Social Security Number on Form 1040 thereby offering protection against identity theft. New regulations require all tax return preparers (including CPAs, Attorneys and EAs) to register yearly for a PTIN.

  • Know the e-filing requirements for your state. You can find this information by Clicking Here.

  • Apply with the bank if you plan to offer bank products.

  • Register for one of the upcoming TaxSlayer Pro New User Seminars. Click Here for more info.

  • Register for the Annual TaxSlayer Pro User Seminar to be held November, 3rd and 4th in Augusta, GA or in Las Vegas, NV November, 8th and 9th – call for more information at 888-420-1040.

  • Get your network set up prior to tax season. Then call
    (706) 868-0985 to speak with a technical support representative who will have TaxSlayer Pro running on your network in a matter of minutes.

  • If you are unable to attend one of the TaxSlayer Pro Seminars, consider scheduling a Web-Ex training session with our Director of Education.

New Users Need to Apply for EFIN/ETIN

First year e-filers will need to submit Form 8633 (Application to Participate in the IRS E-file Program). You will also need to be
fingerprinted and have a background check completed by the IRS.

If you are applying, make sure to submit your application early. It normally takes about six weeks for the IRS to complete the background check. If you wait until the last minute to apply, past experience has shown that it can take 8-12 weeks to get final approval. This could cause you to be unable to e-file during the busiest part of the e-file season.

If you wish to E-File business returns, you will need to call the IRS at 866-255-0654 to make sure that your 8633 is properly updated. This will ensure that your electronic business returns are accepted.

If you have any questions or concerns about e-filing, contact your sales representative or the IRS web site (www.irs.gov) or by calling the E-file Help Desk at: 866-255-0654.

What is a PTIN and How Do I Obtain One?

The IRS has implemented mandatory yearly registration for tax preparers. All paid preparers will be required to obtain a PTIN or preparer tax identification number from the IRS that will be used on each tax return instead of the tax preparer’s social security number.

Tax return preparers will be required to renew their registration yearly. There will be a fee for this registration and each renewal. TaxSlayer strongly suggests that if you do not have a PTIN yet to apply now. Please visit the IRS website for more information concerning PTIN registration and testing.
