- Register for your EFIN- this is the most critical step that is often overlooked because many people don’t remember or know they need it. The EFIN (Electronic Filing Identification Number) allows you to efile (electronically file) your Federal and State tax returns to the IRS and State governments. The process generally takes 45 days to receive your EFIN. Need your EFIN? Click here to begin.
- Obtain a new
PTIN or renew your current PTIN- If you registered your existing PTIN (Preparer
Tax Identification Number) or obtained a new PTIN after 9/28/10 you will need to
renew your PTIN when the renewal period opens in October 2011. Need your PTIN? Click
here to begin.
Before you begin your PTIN application, be sure you have all your personal info ready. If you obtained your PTIN before 9/28/10 and you did not renew it after that date, you must register using the new online system or Form-12. You may not be issued the same PTIN when you register. - Find out what your state requirements are. Review the IRS state page for your state’s requirements.
- Evaluate TaxSlayer Pro.
